Notes: “When viewing late 1950's sci-fi / horror movies like MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS, it's important to remember that it was made after the "discovery" of the youth market. Prior to the 50's, teens and college age people were barely recognized as relevant. Movies like this met the need of filling theaters and drive-ins with young, popcorn-munching Romeos and Juliets.

As a film, MOTC is the perfect example of this trend, containing the titular creature, a Jekyll and Hyde / Wolf Man knockoff. It's college setting is custom made for younger moviegoers. The fact that the plot is simplistic, or that the effects are cheeezey, is NOT a mistake! Yes, we can see the wires on the big dragonfly. Yes, the caveman makeup is more hillbilly than Neanderthal. This is direct marketing in action.

While TV was luring the masses back into their living rooms, movies had to be all the more outlandish, yet easy enough to grasp for the average kid. They also had to be cheap. This would only get worse in the 1960's, when TV added color.

Arthur Franz plays his Professor Blake character as a scientist "meddling with nature", by playing around with prehistoric specimens. Of course, radiation is thrown into the mix, along with the obligatory romance. Legendary Director Jack Arnold wasn't "slumming" by making this movie. He was making the sort of picture that was to become the norm. Everything had to be geared toward teenagers, leaving more adult themes to be sidelined.

However, that doesn't make this a bad movie. It's quite fun to watch. In context, it is a great example of movies that were meant to play in the background while we hopped into the backseats of our cars! How many amorous couples ever really watched these movies, until years later when they "grew up"?...”
